Abstract

The modern history of Korea, which has been smudged the Imperial Japanese’s colonial rule, division and war, and dictatorship, has accumulated a lot of past mistakes. It is an army that is essential in the clearing of past wrongs. This is the result of the military taking control of the regime and breaking democracy in Korea. Thus, human rights of the people were seriously violated. This has raised the need to sort out the military’s “past mistakes”. The National Defense’s past truth searching committee is composed of eight events related to the military past history -‘Forced conscription and greening project’, ‘Silmido incident’, ‘10 · 27 sudden attack of temples’ ‘Press control of the new military authorities’, ‘12 · 12, 5 · 17, and 5 · 18 incidents’, ‘Samchung military’ camps incident’ ‘Suspicious cases of manipulation of spies against residents in Japan and related Japan’, and ‘ Investigation of civilians in security companies’.BR The purpose of this article is to examine the investigation activities of the National Defense’s truth searching committee of 5 · 18. The committee collected and analyzed data extensively under the principle of collecting all data related to 5 · 18. The committee also interviewed the people involved. Through the data and interviews, the committee confirmed that 5 · 18 was the result of the desire to take control of political soldiers and that it had caused enormous damage to the people.BR However, some key issues have not been revealed due to the lack of data and limitations of the interviews. In addition, there is a limitation that the disposal and manipulation of data can not be confirmed. Future research activities should overcome these limitations and reexamine the meaning, status, and prospects of 5 · 18. 5 · 18 It should be reemphasized as an example of what the significance of the truth-clarification is to the development of human rights and democracy in Korea, and how the military has exerted its original mission, It is also necessary to review the material and record additional testimony. Thus, I hope that the ‘authoritative’ report at the national level will be written.
