Abstract

This chapter describes the profession of physical therapy in the United States, from its origin to its current status, and issues that confront the profession. Milestones in the history and development of the profession, and its representative organization in the United States, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), are described, including the impact of polio epidemics and the two world wars. The current vision, mission, and core values statements are identified and their focus on improving the health of society is discussed. These statements have influenced the adoption of positions by the APTA to support public health policies, such as CDC recommendations for age-appropriate vaccinations, reduction of firearms-related deaths, and selection of physical therapy instead of opioids to manage pain.
