Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of public library projects and initiatives that feature an innovative idea, approach or service. These examples of innovation have been identified through a literature review of library industry articles and news features from 2013 onwards. Many libraries have developed and implemented services and projects that are innovative, demonstrating the enthusiasm public libraries have for constantly evolving their services to meet the demands of today's changing world. The overview of innovative activities is grouped into the five broad areas of collections, customer services, technology, programmes and library buildings. Recent innovation by libraries in collections focuses on the use and development of digital collections, the use of outreach with physical collections, patron participation in the development of collections and making the most out of or adapting existing collections. Libraries continue to improve customer services with opportunities for participatory planning, improving access and engagement and a focus on extending opening hours through open library initiatives. Libraries are utilising technology such as social media, apps and self-service to provide innovative services to their users, as well as improving internet use and access. Libraries provide a wide variety of innovative programmes, with growth in digital literacy programmes, reading and literature-based programmes, science and technology-based programmes and programmes that focus on education and lifelong learning. Finally, innovation in library building design and construction has seen several stunning new libraries recently constructed.
