Abstract

The α-acyloxyplasmalogens recently proven to be cell constituents contain a masked α-hydroxyaldehyde as structural unit. The cytotoxic characteristics of free aldehydes should be increased by an OH group in the α position. Thus mammalian cells possess a specific defense mechanism against cell degeneration in the form of masked α-aldehydes. The model compound 1 with an enolether-enolacetate structural unit proved to be a potent anticancer agent against ovarian tumor cells in vitro.
