Abstract

This chapter introduces the importance of radiation exposure and its effect on the properties of polymeric materials such as plastics, elastomers, adhesives, paints, coatings, and composites. Much of the focus is on space due to the increased interest in space exploration and travel. However, radiation exposure also comes from nuclear power, curing and cross-linking processes, medical treatments, sterilization, and food irradiation. This chapter discusses the types of ionizing radiation, dosage measures, and radiation sources for laboratory exposures. The general effects on polymeric materials are also discussed.
