Abstract
FGM/C is predominantly performed on children ranging in age from 2-15 years, however, the vast majority of literature, teaching and research focuses on women of child bearing age and management of FGM/C during pregnancy, peripartum, and postpartum. To date, there are no FGM/C pediatric clinical practice guidelines for infants, pre-pubertal and pubertal girls. In the US, there is no standardized training for pediatricians, family medicine physicians, or sub-specialty pediatric physicians in the disciplines of general surgery, urology, gynecology, or child abuse to appropriately diagnose, medically manage, or counsel patients and families regarding FGM/C. Similarly, there are no national or state standards for when to report cases to legal authorities or to state child protection services. There are also no specific recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics regarding the need for standardized external genital exams on all girls at all general physical examinations. I will present several cases of FGM/C with clinical photos in children and discuss medical, ethical, and legal issues.
