Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to modelling methodology, highlighting the issues that need to be addressed for successful application in physiology and medicine. The nature and purpose of models are considered, as are approaches that can be adopted, followed by an examination of the ingredients of good modelling methodology. These include model formulation, identification, and validation. The role of simulation is also discussed as is the need for high-quality data. The chapter thus sets the scene for the detailed methodological presentations and application studies that follow.
