Abstract

This chapter provides a concise introduction to the use of Matlab software. The origins of Matlab are discussed. The text includes the definition, formulation, and manipulation of matrices and the role they play in Matlab . An introduction to scripting or programming in Matlab is provided and the use and definition of Matlab functions, including anonymous functions, is given. Input and output are Matlab are described, including the use of formatting to produce structured output. Methods for loading and saving large data files are given. The use of Matlab graphics functions is described, including functions for the generation of two-dimensional graphs of many types and three-dimensional surfaces and contours. The concept of Handle Graphics is introduced and its use is illustrated. The use of nonnumeric data and data structures is considered and examples are given. Problems and solutions are provided.
