Abstract

The relationship between Orthodox monasteries and church authorities in the late XVIII – early XX century is considered on the example of numerous materials of the Vologda province. The system of synodal-diocesan institutions, types of monastic monasteries, the number and composition of the brethren, regulation of the number of monastics in the Vologda diocese is characterized. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the development of economic activities in monasteries, the establishment of the level of monastic income and expenses, the evolution of social and charitable activities of monasteries. Both positive and negative influence of the church authorities on all aspects of the life of monasteries has been revealed. The publication is addressed to history researchers, teachers, students, and all those interested in the past of our country and the European North.
