Abstract

The article sums up the views of established Bulgarian linguists on the question of which verbs can function as copulas in the nominal predicate. The author takes into account all verbs that have been regarded as linking verbs, starting with Lyubomir Andreychin’s works and continuing up to present day theories. Semantic and grammatical arguments are presented in favour of the idea that (at least from the perspective of the current state of this study) only the verbs ставам/стана, оказвам се/окажа се, явя-вам се, оставам/остана, излизам/изляза, представлявам and съставлявам may be considered as verbs forming nominal predicates. The author takes the stance that the predicative may be expressed by a nominal group (a noun or an adjective). Keywords: copulas, predicatives, nominal predicates, subject complements
