Abstract

Objectives In this study, the purpose of this study was to identify the pathways of covert narcissism and internalized shame that have been reported to affect SNS addiction proneness in college students, and to determine whether gender has a moderating effect on these pathways. Methods To this end, a test was conducted to measure related variables targeting 550 college students located nationwide. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to confirm the relationship between the main variables. Using PROCESS Macro model 4, the effect of covert narcissism on SNS addiction proneness was verified through internalized shame, and using PROCESS Macro model 7, gender differences and internalized shame in the relationship between covert narcissism and SNS addiction proneness were examined. The moderated mediating effect of was verified. Results It was confirmed that a significant positive correlation appeared between covert narcissism and SNS addiction proneness. It was confirmed that a partial mediating effect of internalized shame appeared in the relationship between covert narcissism and SNS addiction proneness. As a result of examining the mediated moderating effect of gender and internalized shame in the relationship between covert narcissism and SNS addiction proneness, it was found that women had more influence on SNS addiction proneness through internalized shame according to the level of covert narcissism. Conclusions This study identifies the pathways of covert narcissism and internalized shame that have been reported to affect SNS addiction proneness among college students, and confirms whether gender has a moderating effect on these pathways. Intra-individual variables that affect addiction and gender-specific differences were identified. This is significant in that it presented counseling and educational intervention methods for SNS addiction and data for follow-up research.
