Abstract

Analyze the film <The Face Reader> using the principles of Eastern philosophy. First, we examine the character of Sky, who represents fate in the movie. Sky embodies the concept of “Deokbokbulilchi” (the discrepancy between virtue and fate). Unlike the ideal “moral Sky” associated with benevolence and virtue, the film’s Sky lacks reciprocity in virtue and only responds with wrath. This discrepancy is influenced by the concept of “Fate Sky”, which dictates that fate must inevitably unfold. Next, we observe the transformation of the film’s main character, Kim Naekyung, in the context of the “Deokbokbulilchi” and “Fate Sky”. Initially, Naekyung acknowledges fate but emphasizes individual actions. However, as the story progresses, he transitions to accepting fate with equanimity. Overall, <The Face Reader> follows the grand narrative of fate, with little emphasis on individual actions. This philosophical analysis highlights the ethical implications of fate and personal relationships.
