Abstract

The traditional small fishing boat, so-called "Sabani", is widely used in Okinawa for a long time. So that the Sabani can be used in Indonesia as a small fishing boat from now on, we made an investigation on its hull form and stability, and derived some conclusions. The characteristics of the Sabani have been as follows : 1) The Sabani has a very slim body. The ratio of L_<pp>/B of the Sabani is about 5.7, that is 0.5 times as much as that of the Canoe (11.9), and about 1.3 times as much as that of the Japanese modern small fishing boat (4.5) and Wasen (4.3). So that Sabani lies between the Wasen and the Canoe. Recently owing to motorization of the Sabani, the body of the modern-type one is a little deeper than that of old-type one. 2) The initial stability of the Sabani is small, but its GZ value increases rapidly over 13°〜15°in inclination angle. The GZ value of the Sabani which has a stabilizing board is still larger than that of the old type of Sabani increasing over 7°in inclination angle. 3) The N_<10> coefficient of the old type of Sabani is 0.02〜0.03. It is the standard value, but the N_<10> coefficient of Sabani which has the stabilizing board or the curving of bottom line is 0.06. By this improvement, the latter type of fishing boat has greater stability and safely.
