Abstract

Approximately 99% of fishing boats in Japan are registered as being less than 20 gross tonnage. For such small fishing boats, hull performance standards have not been sufficiently examined, mainly because major manufacturers and local shipyards tend not to publish data on hull forms. In order to make improvements in the hull performance of fishing boats, it is essential to gain an understanding of the hull lines of boats currently in operation. To this end, we examined and verified the measurement accuracy of laser telemetry in terms of distance to the object and the illumination angle. On the basis of the accuracy characteristics of laser telemeter, we used the non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) and three-dimensional CAD to produce drawings of the hulls of small fishing boats. In addition, the effectiveness of the examined measuring method was verified by taking measurements from a small fishing boat.
