Abstract

α-Crystallin, a significant protein of the mammalian eye lens, binds to the lens membrane progressively with age and cataract formation with the corresponding decline in the level of α-crystallin in the lens cytoplasm. Despite various studies of α-crystallin binding to the lens membranes and phospholipid vesicles, the nature of such binding is still unclear. This study investigated a cholesterol/model of human lens-lipid (Chol/MHLL) membrane with Chol/MHLL mixing ratios varying from 0 to 60 mol% Chol.
