Abstract

Objectives The purposes of this study is to investigate the perceptions of elementary and secondary school teachers on the use of generative AI in the classes, identify the needs of elementary and secondary school teachers, and provide a basis for exploring ways to expand the use of generative AI in the classes in the future. Methods A questionnaire was developed, and a questionnaire survey was conducted on 645 elementary, middle, and high school teachers located in Chungcheongbuk-do. The survey results were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 program. Results 189 teachers had experience using Generative AI in the classes, accounting for 29.3% of the total, and 70 teachers answered that they use Generative AI more than once every two weeks, indicating that the percentage of teachers who still use it in class is still low. The Generative AI that is mainly used is interactive AI such as ChatGPT, and when using it, the motivation for students to participate in class was cited as the biggest advantage. Teachers who have no experience in using it chose the lack of knowledge of using Generative AI the most for that reason, and when the intention to use it in the future is expressed on a 5-point Likard scale, it was found that they are willing to use it with an average of 3.20 (SD=0.87). The percentage of foreign students or students who are not good at using language as Generative AI content available in class was the highest. Conclusions In order to expand the use of Generative AI in classes, teacher training should be conducted to improve teachers' ability to use Generative AI, and materials such as class cases should be provided. It is also necessary to prepare alternatives to misinformation provision, blocking and preventing abuse of harmful information, and plagiarism and copyright issues.
