Abstract

Abstract: The paper presents the results of a study of parliamentary rhetoric of the 47th National Assembly MPs, carried out through rhetorical analysis. Four significant topics related to foreign and domestic policy, as well as a debate on a vote of no confidence against a regularly elected government, are selected. The analysis is based on speeches and appearances of MPs from seven parliamentary political parties and coalitions over the period from 3 December 2021 to 31 August 2022. The rhetorical figures, arguments and communicative techniques used by parliamentary speakers are identified after an analysis implemented on the basis of a previously prepared registration card including basic rhetorical techniques. It confirmed the hypothesis that the main features of parliamentary rhetoric in the studied period are the polarization of positions, the reduced use of rhetorical figures, the construction of arguments through familiar techniques and their combination with manipulative techniques. Parliamentary debates take place in a tense atmosphere and political figures fail to build trust in their constituents and to mobilize them to vote in the subsequent elections. Keywords: parliamentary rhetoric, debates, speakers, MPs, rhetorical figures, arguments.
