Abstract

The study presents a method to select the best machine tool structure to satisfy the design requirements from several proposed models in the design stage, by using the computer program for static, thermal and dynamic analysis of machine tool structure. The selection is divided in the following three stages; in the first stage, the first elimination of the proposed models is performed from the stand point of the static rigidity and the steady state thermal behaviours of the structures; in the second stage, the best structure is selected by examining the non-steady state thermal behaviours and dynamic rigidity on the qualified models; and in the third stage, the environment conditions for the selected model is set up to satisfy the design require-ments. The procedures for selection is demonstrated for machine tool structures with single column as an example.
