중학교 3학년 학생들의 과학과 학업성취도의 성별차이

Abstract

이 연구에서는 전수평가로 치러진 국가수준 학업성취도평가에서 과학 성취도가 성별에 따라 어떤 차별성을 나타내는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2010년 중학교 3학년 국가수준 학업성취도평가 결과를 대상으로 과학과 성취도의 성별차이, 성별 성취수준 비율, 내용영역별 및 행동영역별 성별 정답률 차이, 내용영역에 따른 문항별 정답률 중 성별 차이가 큰 문항을 분석하는 것으로 나누어 연구를 진행하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 우리나라 중학교 3학년 학생들의 과학성취도는 여학생이 남학생보다 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 우수학력에는 남학생 비율이, 중위권 집단에서는 여학생 비율이, 기초학력미달에는 남학생 비율이 더 높았다. 셋째, 내용영역 중 물질, 생명 영역에서 여학생이 남학생보다 정답률이 높았으며, 행동영역에서는 지식과 탐구영역에서 모두 여학생이 남학생보다 정답률이 높았다. 넷째, 성별 정답률의 차이가 가장 높게 나타난 문항을 살펴본 결과 남학생은 자료를 해석하는 문항의 경우, 여학생은 규칙을 기억해야 하는 문항, 일상생활과 관련된 친숙한 문항의 경우에서 정답률이 높았다. 이러한 과학에 대한 중학교 남녀의 성별 특성에 대한 정보를 바탕으로 학생들의 약점을 보완하고 지원할 수 있는 교수 학습 방안에 대한 시사점을 얻을 수 있다. This study examined the characteristics of the National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) in Science according to gender. It investigated gender achievement differences in the science section of the 2010 NAEA, the ratio of gender difference in achievement, the ratio of correct answers within each content domain and behavioral domain, and the items which showed high differences between males and females. The results indicate first, that, for 9th graders, females outperformed males in academic achievement in science. Second, with respect to the ratio of correct answers, males outperformed females in the advanced and below basic level groups, but females outperformed males in intermediate level groups. Third, females outperformed males in knowledge and inquiry in the behavior domains, and in chemistry and biology in the content domains. Fourth, an analysis of the items showing the largest gender gap indicated that males outperformed females in interpreting data, while females outperformed males in the items concerned with daily life and items related to the memorization of rules. This research on gender differences in science will allow teachers to complement the weaknesses of students when they study science, and support improved instructional methods in science.
