Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyze the peculiarities of formation and development of social and competitive English-style ballroom dances in the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the activity of leading dancers and judges, members of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and the Official Board of Ballroom Dancing (now British Dance Council), in the context of developing the technique for performing and standardization of the European Ballroom Dance Program; to characterize the formation of competitive ballroom dance, the peculiarities of holding championships, festivals and competitions. The research methodology consisted in the set of basic principles of research – objectivity, historicism, multifactorness, systematicity, complexity, development and pluralism; to fulfill the research purpose, the following methods of scientific knowledge were used: problem-chronological, concrete-historical, statistical, descriptive, and logical-analytical. The scientific novelty of the work lies in a comprehensive study of the stage of formation of social and competitive English-style ballroom dances in the 1920s and 1930s, carried out using the academic materials of ISTD, WDC, the rare magazines The Dancing Times and The Monthly Letter Service, as well as memoirs. Conclusions. As a result of the multidimensional study of the peculiarities of formation of social and competitive English-style ballroom dances in the 1920s and 1930s and the analysis of the main principles of standardizing the movements, steps and pace of music design of 4 of the 5 competitive ballroom dances of the European Program, their stylistic features were defined, which were developed in the academic recommendations by leading dancers, members of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and the Official Board of Ballroom Dancing; the system of evaluation and the rules for holding championships and dance festivals in the 1920s-1930s in England were revealed.
