Abstract
Kudo's slip line solutions are compared with the results of machining of carbon steels, α-brass and pure aluminium under various cutting conditions.For the cases of α-brass and other non-ferrous metals which show the coefficient of friction on the rake face less than unity, the solutions are verified to be sucessfully constructed so as to fit measured shear angle φ, friction angle β and observed secondary flow along the tool face. The solutions, however, fail to account for the case of pure aluminium, since the actual coefficient of friction is more than unity.For the cases of carbon steels, the solutions are unable to be constructed so as to fit the measured φ, β and the secondary flow. The reason for the unsuccess may be attributed to the paticular nature of the secondary flow along the tool face. Eliminating the secondary flow layers as a particular form of built-up edge, the solutions are successfully constructed.The cutting forces predicted by the solutions for a constant maximum shear stress are in good agreement with the measured forces for the case of α-brass and for the cases carbo steels as well, if the secondary flow layers are eliminated.
