Abstract

The article is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dmitriy Vasilyevich Nikitin, whose life, as the first family doctor of Leo Tolstoy and the doctor of Maxim Gorky, became known at NSMU (Northern State Medical University) only in the 20th century after a publication «L.N. Tolstoy and medicine» by his student G.A. Kulizhnikov. D.V. Nikitin was not only an excellent clinician respected by his famous patients, but also served the common people for many years, working at Zvenigorod Zemstvo Hospital, hospitals in Moscow and Arkhangelsk. All his life, Dmitriy Vasilyevich studied and taught students at the Department of Infectious Diseases of ASMI (Arkhangelsk State Medical Institute), which he founded in 1936; he did scientific research from his student days, published articles and monographs. He never hid his views on what was happening in the country, defended the church and faith in God, which is why he got in Butyrka prison by the «Moscow region doctors’ case», and was then exiled to Arkhangelsk. In 1960 he was posthumously rehabilitated.
