Abstract

The Japan Medical Library Association (JMLA) resolved to form a medical information network with the hospital libraries at the annual general meeting in 1980. The subcommittee on the hospital libraries was formed under the System Committee of JMLA in 1985. The subcommittee conducted the fact-finding survey among 385 hospitals which were obligated to facilitate their own libraries throughout Japan. The subcommittee made a review of the survey results and submitted three proposals to the parent committee. In response to the proposals, JMLA has been making an effort to activate its 8 chapters' activities and therefore, enforcing a better suport system to the hospital libraries. In this paper, the authors report on why the medical information networking is necessary, how it should be promoted, an introduction to the present status of local networks and its future perspectives, and the role of the JMLA members, which are expected to function as a supporting library to the hospital libraries.
