Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify the correlation between factors affecting self-identity, self-esteem, and school adjustment through an educational program utilizing aquarium fish among high school students, aiming to provide foundational data for animal-mediated education. The research targeted 17 students in the experimental group and 21 students in the control group attending a specialized high school in U City. Pre-test, implementation of the educational program, and post-test were conducted sequentially. The measurement tools used in the study were self-identity, self-esteem, and school adjustment questionnaires. The program classes were conducted once a week for 50 minutes each from May 2023 to July 2023, totaling 12 sessions. The control group did not participate in the program classes. Data collected through questionnaires were analyzed for normality using the SPSS/Win (Ver.27) statistical program, and non-parametric statistical analysis was conducted. The significance level for all analyses was set at p<0.05. The results of this study are as follows. The correlation between high school students' self-identity and school adjustment was analyzed for each sub-factor, revealing significant static correlations with autonomy, self-acceptance, goal orientation, leadership, and intimacy factors, except for future certainty, in terms of teacher-student relationship, peer relationship, school classes, and school rules. Through the educational program utilizing aquarium fish, students explore themselves, understand their self-image, and develop the will to achieve their goals, thereby influencing their self-identity through school life. Additionally, it was verified that the teacher-student relationship influences school adjustment. Therefore, the results of this study are deemed to be useful as foundational data for evaluating the effectiveness of future animal-mediated education programs utilizing aquarium fish.
