Abstract
In this article the intertextual relations of the V.A. Kaverin’s novel “The Two Captains” and classics of adventure literature are considered. Among the “literary ancestors” of Sanya Grigoriev, there are the characters of R.L.B. Stevenson, J.G. Verne, J.F. Cooper and M. Twain. “Two Captains” is similar to the works of these authors with their adventure novels by the motifs of oath, escape, discovery of a mysterious artefact, being an accidental witness of a crime. In addition, some of the Kaverin’s characters belong to the types of hero-captains and eccentric scientists that are traditional for foreign adventure literature. The dialogue of the texts is realized in the novel as a system of reminiscences, which allows a reader to associate the narration with the stories of characters of significant works and novels, traditionally included into the range of texts for children and teenagers. It enables to focus not on Socialist realism but on the adventure nature of the novel. The image of Sanya Grigoriev is characterized by a twofold nature: he turns out to be both a devoted reader of adventure literature and the author of his own adventure novel, which he “creates” independently, telling the reader about his own life and the fate of Captain Tatarinov.
