Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the situation and a comprehensive assessment of trends in the development of railway network in the Greater Urals. Although the development strategy of the railway transport is defined in a separate document for strategic management, there still remains an excessively high level of uncertainty regarding the medium-term prospects for the network development, and many of the prospective facilities that used to be within the scope of project initiatives in recent years have been withdrawn from it for an indefinite period. The article reviews these processes based on the trends, needs and opportunities available in the Greater Urals. Based on the performed strategic analysis of the railway transport network development some proposals are made on ranking of project initiatives in this macro-regional territory. A conclusion is made that the Northern Latitudinal Railway, the Belkomur Railway, Obskaya-Polunochnoe railway line as well as the North-Siberian Railway in its Urals section are the most sustainable projects in conditions of significant uncertainties and accumulated delays in development of the railway transport network.
