Фразеологічні одиниці в повісті М. В. Гоголя «Вечір напередодні Івана Купала»: структурно-семантичний і перекладацький аспект

Abstract

The study states that spatio-temporal characteristics of the short-story by N. V. Gogol «St. John’s Eve» are closely related to language means, and, since the chronotopic dominants in this literary work are mystical time and space, the text of the story is overstuffed with phraseological units. Therefore, the article presents structural-semantic analysis of phraseological units in the literary text of this short-story and methods of their translation into English (based on the translation by R. Pevear and L. Volokhonsky). It is proposed to divide phraseological units in the specified short-story according to their connotation into 3 types: 1) phraseological units of demonological semantics; 2) phraseological units of biblical-evangelical semantics; 3) colloquial and vernacular-expressive phraseological units (which, in their turn, are divided into those originating from: a) folk art; b) historical realia; c) everyday life; d) production and professional sphere; e) from observations on the wildlife). At the semantic level, phraseological units in the text of the short-story by N. V. Gogol «St. John’s Eve» are divided into: 1) phraseological expressions; 2) phraseological combinations; 3) phraseological unities; 4) phraseological fusions. Phraseological units in Gogol’s short story are vivid figural expressions that reflect the national color and the historical era, and comprise realia and untranslatable components, which makes them at the same time interesting and difficult in terms of translation into English. As a result of the study, it was proved that 158 phraseological units in the short story by N. V. Gogol under investigation were translated into English with the help of 4 main translation methods: loan translation (literal translation); translation by phraseological analogue; descriptive translation; translation using phraseological equivalents.
