Abstract

Identity does not change as the essence of existence or the quality that identifies it. It is an arbitrary self-awareness accompanied by other recognitoni. The design of the ‘symbol mark’ of the local government for the expression of identity should express the unique characteristics that do not change well. However, in the case of local governments in Korea, despite the enormous cost and effort, there are constant debates as to whether the 'symbol mark' well represents the characteristics and identity of the region or whether the meaning of the symbol is well conveyed to the local residents.
As a result of examining the identity expression method of the 'symbol mark' of local governments in this study, it was found that local governments in Korea found the expression of identity in the natural environment the most, followed by the name of the local government. Relatively, there were not many that express historical and cultural characteristics in the symbol mark.
A method of expressing the identity of a local government, just as the history and culture of a country shape the present shape, the local history and culture shape the current shape of the region, and a person's past life creates the person's present shape Therefore, it is suggested that historical and cultural characteristics are more desirable.
There may be differences in the degree of splendor of history and culture for each local government, but there is no place where the history of the region is absent. The future can be changed at any time by the election of the head of the local government. Therefore, we propose a design methodology that expresses the identity of the local government that reflects the past in the 'symbol mark' posted by the local government and the identity of the local government that reflects the future in the 'brand slogan'.
