Abstract

The purpose of this was to provide substantial information necessary for the educational approach and instruction of elementary dance and ultimately for the normalization and effectiveness of the dance by way of investigating and analyzing the current status of dance instruction by elementary school teachers. By using convenience sampling, the study selected 275 teachers (50 male and 225 female) from elementary schools located in Busan. The survey from with 58 questions was used to study the current status of school dance operation and facilities and improvement points of such operation and facilities. Data obtained from the survey were statistically processed through x^2. The conclusion of the study is as follows; First, elementary school teachers were integrating dance instruction into physical education irrespective of their gender. The teachers also followed the curriculum of elementary dance education was provided by the Ministry of Education irrespective of their age. Among the teachers, those who experienced dance instruction training became a model for each dance motion, while those having no such experience asked excellent dance students to be a model for the other students. Second, most of the teachers used auditoriums or classrooms as places of dance instruction and had no experience of the instruction. The attributed difficulties in dance instruction to lack in practical resources. Among elementary school teachers to strengthen their own capability of dance instruction, while female ones frequently participated in dance training or lectures. Third, male teachers who participated in this study appeared that dance room and small auditoriums were most essential as facilities and resources for dance instruction, while female teacher, videos. Both of the two groups considered basic movement applications as essentially treated part of elementary dance education. They also mentioned they most preferred hip-hop as the field of dance instruction training, followed by aerobic and dance sports. Most of the surveyed teachers recognized the necessity of teachers specializing in dance instruction and responded that school facilities should be urgently supplemented and improved to normalize elementary dance education.
