Abstract

This review article aims to discuss the development of a research ecosystem in Cambodia. It focuses on recent initiatives and future directions for developing a vibrant research ecosystem in the country. The article employs document analysis and draws on the knowledge and extensive experiences of the researchers. It reveals a number of initiatives and investment projects that have been introduced by the Cambodian government, higher education institutions, and other relevant stakeholders to promote research development in Cambodia. The article also provides a summary of key challenges that have impeded the development of a vibrant research ecosystem in Cambodia. In addition, the article discusses future directions at both policy and implementation levels, outlining 10 recommendations to build a vibrant research ecosystem in Cambodia. It concludes with suggestions for future research.
