Abstract

The article discusses the specifics of written medical discourse. This article describes and analyzes the term «medical discourse». The author analyzes the functional -stylistic peculiarities of written scientific medical discourse and written popular science medical discourse as exemplified in authentic texts chosen from the major world medical journals. The research proved that written scientific medical discourse is characterized by the strict style of scientific presentation of neurosurgery, because terminology and abbreviations are used.Popular science written discourse addresses the large-scale readership on the issues of public health care: texts of these articles are simpler, fewer medical terms and clichés are used. In the article the author comes to the conclusion that the main features of medical texts are the use of a large number of special vocabulary, abbreviations, special grammatical structures, aiming at clearness and unambiguity. In this article the term «persuasive impact» is studied in the context of written medical discourse. Persuasive impact is regarded as manipulation of the reader of the messages with the aim to persuade, call them for some action.
