Abstract
The article deals with some aspects of organization of educational and upbringing system in Kharkiv Correctional Shelter for Juveniles in the late 19th – early 20th century. On basis of the analysis of historical and pedagogical literature, periodical press, regulatory framework and reports general specifics of work of correctional shelters for juveniles of the period under investigation as well as contingent of children who were subject to re-education in specialized institutions of public custody and organizational model of educational process were revealed. It has been proved that a positive educational and upbringing system was developed in Kharkiv Correctional Shelter for Juveniles. Its practical value was to take into account a whole range of methods of influence on individuals, such as knowledge of child’s nature, formation of his moral behavior, provision of opportunity to gain professional skills through age consideration, his physical and psychological abilities. The educators implemented pedagogical support throughout child’s entire stay in the Shelter. They analyzed the activity of Shelter leavers as well and created family, festive atmosphere through the organization of theatre studios, group choirs, various entertainment activities (“reading vague pictures”, “a magic lamp”, carousel riding, arranging illuminations and fireworks), excursions, exhibitions, lectures, meetings with outstanding specialists in this or that field of science, etc. The article highlights the importance of study the historical experience of the past as well as practice of custody of children and the youth for solving modern social and pedagogical problems.
