Abstract

The phenomenon of forgiveness is interpreted as a human conscious decision to abandon negative feelings and improve one’s own state. Forgiveness is also regarded as a decision to change one’s life and stop feeling like a victim by having taken a situation under one’s own control. The paper analyses the relationship between the concepts of forgiveness and reconciliation. The concept of forgiveness is also studied in the context of other, similar in meaning, terms. The theoretical data on the role of forgiveness in maintaining physical and mental health are presented. The factors that impede the process of forgiving as well as those contributing to it are considered. It is hypothesized that there exist certain personal factors which determine the manifestation of higher level of forgiveness. On a representative sample of adolescents (N=65) is has been shown that there is a lawful relationship between the capacity for forgiveness and such personal characteristics as agreeableness, conscientiousness, personal maturity, empathy, re?ection, courage and hope.
