Abstract

The article deals with possibilities of using professional terminological dictionaries in the process of librarians’ language and terminological training as an important component of their professional development. It has been emphasized that the knowledge and deep understanding of professional terminology is one of the most important professional qualities of a specialist, one of the main indicators of formation of his or her professional competence. The place and role of professional terminological dictionaries as an effective means of mastering professional terminology in educational, professional and research activities, as well as in the process of professional self-development of librarians, have been stated. The article emphasizes that the use of professional terminological dictionaries is efficient in the process of mastering scientific and professional terminology – from learning professional terminology in general to in-depth study of terms and understanding of terminology as an orderly system. A systematic use of the terminological dictionary promotes the development of skills of correct use of both special and general scientific terms, increase and enrichment of the vocabulary, mastering new knowledge. The meaning of the term “terminological dictionary” has been considered, the functions of terminological dictionaries have been characterized, as well as their classification according to the target use and a reader’s purpose. The importance of a foreign language learning, including terminology, has been stated. It has been noted that under the influence of the transformations in the library and information sphere due to informatization, expansion of international relations and reorientation of scientific libraries’ activities in the direction of forming a single information space, the issue of a foreign language learning, including terminology, is becoming important. Mastering foreign language terminology is a significant factor of a specialist’s competitiveness in any field, including a library. The reference edition “Cataloguing of documents: a short terminological dictionary” has been characterized. In conclusion, it has been noted that terminological literacy of library staff is an important and mandatory component of their professional culture, and the use of professional terminology dictionaries is an efficient means of a professional language formation.
