Abstract

Learners want to know which grammatical pattern expressions can provide particular discourse functions and how to distinguish the usage of these grammatical pattern expressions with the same semantic function. In this regard, this study attempts to examine the distinctive usage of expressions that have the meaning of consecutive events. While ‘-jamaja’ and ‘-giga museobge’ appear to have significant similarities of meaning in that the behavior and events of the antecedent clause first happens and subsequently those of the following clause occur. ‘-jamaja’ and ‘-giga museobge’ semantically have immediacy and contingency, but they are pragmatically and syntactically different. Only a few of the differences are noted in various Korean textbooks and Korean dictionaries. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to analyze semantic, pragmatic, syntactic differences between ‘-jamaja’ and ‘-giga museobge’. First, it analyzed Korean textbooks and dictionaries how ‘-jamaja’ and ‘-giga museobge’ meaning and usage is presented. Based on this analysis, it analyzes the semantic, pragmatic, syntactic differences of ‘-jamaja’ and ‘-giga museobge’. (Chungbuk University)
