Abstract

Asvaghosa was a genius and famous poet of the 1st century A.D. of ancient India. He is considered the greatest epic poet, especially for his two remarkable literary works: Buddhacarita and Soundarananda. Both the epics were written in the Sanskrit Language. The life and teachings of Buddha are the main subjects of these two epics. However, the epics include abundant information on religions, politics, economics, geography, nature, society, and the culture of ancient India. As a result, these two epics are considered as the primary sources of Indian history. In this article, I have explored the natural information of ancient India, particularly on the rivers, trees, seasons, hills, mountains, vines, leaves, flowers, fruits, and other environmental elements mentioned in those epics by Asvaghosa.
