Abstract

This article is devoted to the disclosure of the essential characteristics of extreme tourism from the standpoint of cultural studies. Extreme tourism is an actively developing cultural industry at the global level. Currently, extreme tourism in Russian science is understood either as an independent type of tourism, or as a subspecies of adventure, active, sports or ecological tourism. There is also no uniformity in definitions in English-speaking science. Some of the authors identify extreme tourism with hard adventure tourism, some refer it to an independent type of tourism close to extreme sports. In this article, from the standpoint of an interdisciplinary approach, the reasons for the popularity of extreme tourism are revealed, axiological, socio-economic and psychological factors of its development are revealed, and its essence associated with gaming activity is revealed.
