Abstract

After collecting information about 20,000 modifications of XX century aircraft, the author identified priority designs with landing gears. It is shown that the RB-1 aircraft, often called the first aircraft with a retractable landing gear, really isn’t the first one, and the creation of a retractable landing gear was aimed not at the reduction of the aircraft drag, but at the improvement of take-off and landing characteristics. For the first time, statistical data on the using of the retractable landing gear scheme in the world aircraft engineering are povided.
