Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in life habits according to the gender and grades of middle school students during the growth period, as well as the effect on their life habits on subjective health status and physical fitness. To achieve this goal, the study conducted a survey about life habits and subjective health status aimed at 366 middle school students(188 boys and 178 girls), and measured their body mass indexes and physical fitness. Concerning data analysis, the study undertook the two-way ANOVA and a multiple regression analysis by using the SPSS statistical program. First, exercise habits and daily living habits appeared to be significantly higher in boy students than in girl students, whereas dietary habits were found to be higher in girl students than in boy students. Also, life habits were shown to have no significant difference according to school year. Second, the exercise habits and daily living habits of boy students were discovered to have a significant effect on their subjective health status, whereas the exercise habits of girl students were revealed to have a significant effect on their subjective health status. Third, the life habits of both boy and girl students did not significantly affect their body mass indexes. Fourth, the exercise habits of both boy and girl students were found to significantly affect their muscular strength, power, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance, and the daily living habits of boy students were shown to significantly affect their power and cardiovascular endurance. In conclusion, in order to promote the health and physical fitness of middle school students during the growth period, it is necessary to cultivate good life habits and to make exercise a daily routine. In particular, it is imperative to prepare some plans to enhance the participation of girl students in physical activities.
