Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the meaning and usage of discourse marker, yang in the Jeju dialect. The discourse marker yang in the Jeju dialect is used in three major ways. First, yang is used in vocative meaning. It is used in a similar way to Hello, Hey, and Hi in English. Second, yang is used to attract cautionary attention. However, jeoyang is a discourse marker that is used when a listener is older than a speaker. Third, yang is used to ask a question. Especially, when yang is used to raise the end, it is able to accurately communicate the meaning. Discourse markers appear in many ways, such as yang, jeoyang, and yi in the Jeju dialect. However, it can be confirmed through various examples that there is a slight difference in meaning and usage. In order to preserve the Jeju dialect in the future, it should be used appropriately and accurately according to the circumstances.
