Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Localization of varicose-transformed subcutaneous veins in the popliteal space immediately aims both ultrasound diagnostics doctors and surgeons for the pathology of the short saphenous vein. However, this does not always correspond to reality. A rather rare cause of transformation of subcutaneous veins may be an incompetent perforator vein. The article presents a clinical case of varicose transformation of subcutaneous veins of the popliteal region through an incompetent perforator vein. Initially, the patient was diagnosed with the bulge of the subcutaneous veins within the short saphenous vein. Subsequently, during a duplex scan in a specialized department, an incompetent perforator vein of the popliteal region was revealed, which was confirmed intraoperatively. The article also describes the structural features of the perforator vein of this localization. CONCLUSION: An incompetent perforator vein of the popliteal region may be the cause of a false positive diagnosis of varicose transformation in the system of the short saphenous vein. A large arterial branch from the popliteal artery is located next to the perforator vein of the popliteal region at the subaponeurotic level, which requires their separation before resection of the vein.
