Abstract

Korean confucian were strongly criticized by the intellectuals in the early 1920s. Many intellectuals and young leaders thought Korean confucianism and confucian took responsibility for the fall of Korea in 1910, and were still blocking the development of Korean society. The confucian became to need tools and media to protect themselves. A new type of confucian assembly named Yurim-daewhe (儒林大會) appeared then. What did the confucian appeal through this assembly?BR To survey this, first, the newspaper articles relating to Yurim-daewhe were researched. In result, 39 articles and 27 assemblies in 1920s were found. And, through the articles, the background of appearance, the purposes and results of the assembly in 1920s were analyzed. At last, using more documents such as individual diaries and criminal records, various types oYf urim-daewhe were examined.BR Yurim-daewhe was general social phenomenon since 1920s in colonial Korea. The assembly had several purposes, for example, to participate in independence movement, to cooperate Japan, or to improve confucian rights and benefits. But, the most important was to protect the propertie sof Hyannggyo(鄕校) which were the possession of local confucian in the past. Local confucian was once regarded as local leaders by colonial power, but now were living in the era of loss and burden. Therefore, the conflicts between local confucian and colonial power(county office) for confucian power in local community were necessary, and this situation was exposed throughY urim-daewhe.
