Abstract

Since the Meiji Restoration, Japanese Christianity was abolished with forbidden faith and when it was acknowledged with conditioned freedom of religion, they showed so called ``imperialism`` figure that adapts themselves to the national policy in order to escape from the persecution that they had meanwhile suffered from the society and the government. To see this fact, there`s a curiosity whether the Japanese Christianity and Japanese missionary showed ``imperialism`` figure while they doing missionary work in Korea. In this respect, this research investigated the perception of Japanese Christianity and Japanese missionary on Korea and Japan merger and May First Independence Movement, political matters in Korea during Japanese colonial era. this paper considered the awareness of ‘Japanese annexation of Korea’ and ‘March 1 Independence Movement’ shown by Norimatsuwho did mission work in Korea in earnest, and the view of faith in their lifetime. Norimatsu developed the mission work in Korea biblically and religiously only with his political view on ‘Japanese annexation of Korea’ very rarely exposed. Although Norimatsu commented on ‘March 1 Independence Movement’ as ‘Precipitancy’, it was his biblical view other than a political view. Such a view of faith like this held by Norimatsu was owing to the influence of Herbert G. Brand and his ‘Plymouth Brethern.’ His missionary activity in Korea was the pure religious activity far from ‘Imperialism.’ Eventually, perception of Japanese Christianity and Japanese missionary on Korean matters during the Japanese colonial era was determined that it is difficult to say all of them was ``imperialism``. However, perception of Japanese Christianity and Japanese missionary on Korean matters since 1919 should be researched more henceforth, which was researched insufficiently in the above.
