Abstract

This study aimed to examine the necessity and plan of action to utilize creative and convergence learning capabilities of students through creating picture books using both text and pictures in university liberal arts classes. Picture book creation refers to the journey a creator experiences throughout the entire process from planning to publishing a picture book. The participants were first-year students at a university in Seoul in the first semester of 2021. A total of 68 students attended two classes in Text Understanding and Creation. There were 53 responses, resulting in a 78% response rate. Upon completion of the classes, an online survey analysis was administered, including 22 questions about the overall class, picture book creation process, self-esteem, and satisfaction. The results of this study were described according to the related questions on creativity and convergence of creative activities. Through the experience of expressing their imagination, according to the class procedure, first-year college students can reflect on their lives and increase their self-reflection-sense of accomplishment and confidence to determine what they really want to do. The experience of using digital technologies such as smartphones and tablet PCs has educational significance as it helps enhance the ability to process information effectively, while improving creativity and convergent thinking.
