Abstract

The aim of the present study is to explore the expectations of adolescents of minority status (i.e. of Muslim religion and diverse cultural origin)2 on their future professional and family life as well as on gender relations. To this purpose, adolescents’ views and expectations from both the dominant and minority groups are comparativelyexamined. One hundred and eighty adolescents participated in the study (86 for the dominant group and 94 for the minority). All participants (82 boys and 98 girls) attended Lyceum. Quantitative and qualitative datawere collected concerning the adolescents’ expectations on their future employment and family life as well as their views on gender relations in the public and private sphere. Data included the subjects’ answers toa questionnaire and a composition titled “One day in my future family”. Τhe results of the study reveal the multiple gender identities that are constructed by culturally diverse, in terms of gender, religion and socialstatus, groups of adolescents. Moreover, suggest that as boys and girls of both the minority and the dominant groups project themselves in the future, they try to actively construct the social context they will live in,to position themselves within it and to provide meaning to gender relations.
