Abstract

Mass Media is an important aspect of the life of any person providing the necessary information, opportunities for self-development and entertainment. They can potentially influence people’s opinions and behavior, relationships, and attitudes toward many issues. Thus, Mass Media play an important role in politics, from reviewing major political events to influencing an election campaign. The purpose of this article is to identify the nature and extent of the influence of the media on the formation of politics and the entire global political process. The authors of this article consider the evolution of the media and conceptual approaches to study; reveal their political and ideological orientation; analyze the concepts of “censorship”, “propaganda”, and “information warfare”; using the SWOT analysis, identify the strengths and weaknesses of the media activities, as well as their opportunities and potential threats; determine the positive and negative nature of the media’s impact and the role and prospects of media’s development in the political process. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that this article is an attempt to comprehensively analyze the place and role of the media in the context of policy formation and implementation. The authors conclude that the information space is currently being formed on a global scale, in connection with which the role of the media has increased enormously: they have become the main channel for transmitting information, which can ultimately affect both public opinion and politics in genera
