This paper intends to re-explore the poems by Wu Xinghua, an unknown and forgotten poet in 1930-40s China. Through textually analyzing Wu’s poems and re-mapping the literary genealogy, the paper investigates Wu’s notorious experiments of metrical poetry and his re-interpretation of classical allusions, two prominent contributions considered to modern Chinese poetry. The author articulates the crisis and tension within Wu’s lyrical poetics as well as his pursuit of knowledge, craftsmanship, and subject experience.
