Abstract

The literary works of Daniil Andreev are a typical example of historicism in Russian literature. In the poem “The decline of Ivan the Terrible,” Daniil Andreev shows facts from Russian history. Andreev is looking for similarities with the history of the twentieth century. He thinks that the reason for the tragedy which has taken place later lies in the sixteenth century. The historical facts which he presents in his poem appear as poetical and historical elements. Daniil Andrev wanted to show which meaning tyranny has for the development of the whole Russian history. This poem is very relevant in the context of heavy critics of the totalitarian regime of Stalin.
