Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the trend in the research of Korean sentence patterns and lexical items using corpora, and to explore the future directions in the field. The use of corpora was started from linguistic research such as dictionary compilation, Korean language education and natural language processing, but their application is also expanded to theoretical studies of Korea linguistics. The review of previous research on sentence patterns using corpus methods has shown that we need to expand a syntactically annotated corpus and construct a corpus with thematic role annotations. At the same time we need to discuss the range of predicates which determine sentence patterns. Until now, the majority of studies of lexical items using a corpus have taken a corpus-based approach. A corpus-driven approach, which is yet to be fully explored in Korean linguistics, will prove fruitful in bringing in new perspectives on studying the meaning of lexical items.
