Abstract
The purpose of this study was to clarify how components of biomaterials affect primary calcification of rat bone marrow stromal cells. In this experiment, rat bone marrow stromal cells were cultured on pure titanium and bioactive glass, and each was periodically observed under scanning electron microscopy. Electron probe X-ray microanalysis was also used to analyze the elements, and the DNA content and alkaline phosphatase activity were also measured.Early stages of rat bone marrow stromal cells tended to indicate faster signs of proliferation and differentiation when cultured on bioactive glass than on pure titanium. Furthermore, it also became evident that calcification began at an early period. These results suggested that the calcium and phosphate ions from the bioactive glass surface and reactive layer affect the calcification process of rat bone marrow stromal cells.
